Happy New Year everyone! I am sure you have been busy as a bee over these last few weeks and ready for some real entertainment. This weeks’ list includes some unique and special events that I think you will enjoy. Forget taxes for now, you can deal with those at the end of the month! ; ))
The holidays were good for me, I was able to spend quality time with my special people and get my fix on family love, crazy food and joyous laughter! I had the pleasure of bringing in the New Year with my daughter Sarah Sellers at her performance with Party Machine at Memphis New Year’s Eve! (Psssst – she has her first single coming out February 14, “The Way You Love Me”, so visit her Facebook page to get the details!)
As you know, I have been working on Lyric’s eBook “52 Killer Marketing Tips” that I just published this past week, I have been so pumped about that! You know, it’s not a romance novel or epic writing by any means, but it is jammed packed with what I call the heart and soul of marketing. I invite you to pick it up as a FREE download here, my gift to you for your support of Lyric Marketing this past year. Ok, so let’s get on with the fun. Here is the list I have put together, get out and explore all your senses! I hope to see you out and about!
Love and peace!

Lyric Marketing’s HOT Top 10 List for January 2014!
January 10-12: An Evening of Prokofiev
7:30pm – Bass Performance Hall
As is fitting in the month where the promise of the new year confronts the past, a contemporary work, composed by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s composer-in-residence, finds symphonic kinship with the work of 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev. FWSO’s Donnacha Dennehy showcases Crane, a single-movement piece from 2009, while guest violinist Anne Akiko Meyers interprets Profokiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 on the world’s most expensive violin (technically, the world’s most expensive musical instrument, ever). The program also includes Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 7.
January 10: Colin Quinn’s Unconstitutional
8:00pm – Winspear Opera House
A few years ago, former Saturday Night Live personality Colin Quinn found success on Broadway dissecting, in less than 90 minutes, the history of the entire world. By comparison, reducing the United States Constitution from birth to Barack Obama to a barbed 70 minutes seems downright doable. Quinn riffs on everyone from the original delegates to the Kardashians, and no individual freedom is safe.
January 11: Artists JR, Les Miserables, Lavis, Arthur Pena, Paula Crown
9:00pm to midnight – Dallas Contemporary
The latest exhibition at the Dallas Contemporary looks to be another of the museum’s hot, wet messes. Among the five new shows, I’m most curious to see Les Miserables, a self-described “post conceptual” exhibition organized by Dallas Contemporary director Peter Doroshenko. The banner and photo here are by JR, visit the link, amazing artist!
Various Dates – Sorolla & America
214-768-2516 – Meadows Museum
Until Pablo Picasso’s debut, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) topped the list of internationally respected Spanish painters. Bastida expertly captures the faces, landscapes, and sunlight of his surroundings. More than one hundred paintings, oil sketches and drawings featured in “Sorolla and America” examine the artist’s unique relationship with the United States throughout the early 20th century.
January 15: White Rock Local Market’s Fundraiser Dinner
7:00pm – Garden Cafe – Details here
Chef David Anthony Temple is known for his crazy technique in the kitchen and his big, open heart. This time, he’s doing a fundraiser for White Rock Local Market. The entire dinner will highlight WRLM growers, ranchers, and artisans.
January 17: MLK Candle Lighting Vigil
6:00 to 8:00pm – Haggard Park
Candle Lighting Vigil: Join in unity for “A Light of Change” honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hosted by the Plano Community Forum, this event will be held at Haggard Park located at 901 E. 15th St; downtown Plano – cross from the DART Rail Station. Festivities include a candle lighting ceremony, spoken word, music, and tributes from City of Plano officials and community leaders.
January 19: MLK All-Community Choir Concert
7:00pm – First United Methodist Church
MLK All-Community Choir Concert; a musical tribute to Dr. King featuring Special Guest American Idol Season 5 Finalist, GEORGE HUFF. The public is invited to join the choir; rehearsal will be Sunday, January 19 at 4pm at First United Methodist Church located at 3160 E. Spring Creek Pkwy; Paul Gould, Senior Pastor.
January 19: OK BUCKAROOS a Music Documentary
7:30pm – Texas Theatre
This is the story of a troubadour’s journey in the last years of the twentieth century. Jerry Jeff Walker’s music has led him from the nation’s biggest arenas to hundred-year old honky-tonks; from upstate New York to the beaches of Key West and the hustling sidewalks of New Orleans to the solace of the Texas Hill Country – and for beyond. He’s been a cog in the wheel of the recording industry’s star-making machinery and an involuntary pioneer on the frontier of artistic independence. He wrote one of the biggest mainstream hits of all time and still managed to help jump start a maverick musical movement.
January 26: Dance Theatre of Harlem
7:00pm – Bass Performance Hall
In its fourth decade, Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multicultural dance institution with an extraordinary legacy of providing opportunities for creative expression and artistic excellence that continues to set standards in the performing arts. Dance Theatre of Harlem has achieved unprecedented success, bringing innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression to audiences in New York City, across the country and around the world.
January 25: Hypnotic Donut Dash
8:30am – Fair Park
The strangest mix of fitness and fatness is back for a second year. It’s a 5K run is like every other 5K run. Except, you know, you’re strongly encouraged to eat a Hypnotic Donut before breaking into a swift trot. There will be three donut hole stations along the way, plus even more sugary deliciousness waiting for you at the finish line. There’s also a chubby bunny contest at 9:30 a.m., plus live music and tons of food post-run. If you are so inclined, bring birthday party supplies (hats, table cloths, etc.) or cash donations for The Birthday Party Project. The nonprofit, which provides birthday parties for homeless kids, is this year’s race beneficiary.
FOOD
Why You Should Care: Like Roman-era Gaul, the menu at Paul Singhapong’s (Cru, The French Room, The Mansion) new spot is divided into three parts: “Humble Honey” is full of market street food and the “Swanky Citizen” is more traditional sit-down numbers like Phat Thai. Once you’ve wrapped your head around the fact that Phat Thai is food and not a the biggest DJ in the Phucket club scene, hit the “For Chefs” section for food-tastic fare like pork belly curry and braised short ribs, then wash it down with local brews or a solid collection of sake.
Frisco Gun Club (Just plain weird!)
Though fine dining might not be the first thing on your mind when you enter the largest indoor shooting range in the country, by the time you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll be happy to learn that VIP members at the Frisco Gun Club have access to venison, roasted duck, and salmon pastrami prepared by chef Scott Romano, who trained under Wolfgang Puck and Charlie Palmer for 15 years.
Where to Find It: These guys really like Walgreens. Find ’em generally at Lemmon & McKinney, Beltline & Montfort, or Midway & Frankford.
Dish to Get: The Korean tacos are good, but the kimchi fries are one of the greatest, most addictive substances known to (very, very fat) man.
Taverna Rossa – Craft Pizza & Beer
Brian Luscher of the Grape not only runs his own restaurant but he consults sometimes! Taverna Rossa is one of his newest consulting projects and now open for lunch and dinner. The specialty is the thin-crust pizzas baked in a stone-fired oven. But if that doesn’t float your boat, you can also order small plate appetizers, salads, pastas, and sandwiches. It’s all the regular stuff you’d find at a pizza joint, except with a luscious Luscher twist. To accompany your meal, Taverna Rossa is also providing a list of 24 craft beers and a cocktail menu. Pizza and cocktails… interesting. I guess that’s one way to elevate a pizza restaurant. AND THEY HAVE LIVE MUSIC!!
MUSIC
January 16: An evening with Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel
8:00pm – Bass Performance Hall
For his first solo album in more than a decade, Asleep at the Wheel main man Ray Benson went into the project with a simple mission: To break out from his band, and to try out a few different things. And he had just the right material for it, a highly personal collection of songs, which makes A Little Piece very possibly the most personal album of Ray’s 45-year career.
January 21: Tony Bennett – With Special guest Antonia Bennett
8:00pm – Winspear Opera House
No one in popular American music has recorded for so long and at such a high level of excellence than Tony Bennett. With millions of records sold world-wide and platinum and gold albums to his credit, Bennett has received seventeen Grammy Awards — including a 1995 Grammy for Record of the Year for his “MTV Unplugged” CD which introduced this American master to a whole new generation — and the Grammy Lifetime Award.
7:30pm – Winspear Opera House
As a young man, the pianist André Watts sought to emulate the theatrical playing style of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt (encouraged, in no small part, by his Hungarian mother). This expertise served him well when the legendary Leonard Bernstein tapped him, at age 16, to fill in as a soloist during a New York Philharmonic Concert. The piece was Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat, and Watts’ stunning performance launched a soaring career. This recital features selections from Claude Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, and Sergei Rachmaninov.
